Obituary of Dr. Barry Fletcher
Dr. Barry D Fletcher, passed away in Asheville, North Carolina, on May 17, 2018 at the age of 82. He was the beloved husband and best friend of Heather Carswell Fletcher; loving father of Christopher, Mark and Jennifer; grandfather of Gabriel, Stella and Julien; and cherished brother of Nancy Fletcher Rhoadarmer. Barry was predeceased by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Marwood D Fletcher of Strathroy.
Barry graduated from SDCI, UWO and McGill University. He received his specialty training in pediatric radiology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Always fascinated by clinical research, his efforts during his 40 year career produced over 200 authored and co-authored papers, chapters and books. His work focused on newborn lung disease at The Montreal Children's Hospital and then congenital heart disease at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Then, pediatric oncology lured him to St Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, where he became chairman of diagnostic imaging for 12 years until his retirement. The Society for Pediatric Radiology awarded him its two most distinguished honors, the Gold Medal and Pioneer Awards, for his many contributions as a scientist, teacher, mentor and leader in cutting edge imaging technology which continues to advance the treatment and understanding of childhood cancers.
Barry loved travel, was an avid sportsman, musician and a devoted volunteer.
