Obituary of Donald James Evers

Donald Evers – June 2nd 1939 - May 16th 2019

It is with great love and sadness that the family announces the passing of Donald James Evers on May 16th, at the age of 79. He was predeceased by his parents, Julius and Rose Evers, and his siblings, Eleanor (Frank deceased), Melvin, and Stanley. Left to mourn are his wife, Margaret (nee Vautour); his son, Donald (Elly deceased), and his daughters, Charlene (Chris) and Judy (Shawn); his siblings, Hugh (Mamie), Terrance (Susan deceased), Phillip (Evelyn), Clem (Sharon), Larry (Linda), Vincent (Cathy), Judy, and Randy (Mary Jane); and many loved nieces and nephews. Papa Don will be dearly missed by his grandchildren, Sean (Terri), Breanna, Kenzie, and Kenny.

Don was born in New Liskeard and grew up in Trout Creek and Sarnia with his eleven siblings. He had an incredible work ethic, spending 15 years at Durance Provisioners, and was very proud of his career, becoming a First-Class Stationary Engineer and working at Suncor for 25 years. There, he became part of the fire crew, was involved in the creation of the annual Suncor Christmas floats, and participated in Sarnia Golf & Curling. After retiring, Don moved to Strathroy in 1999 and spent many of his years woodworking and golfing, becoming a member at the Bear Creek Golf & Country Club, volunteering in the Strathroy Caradoc Cancer Golf Tournament, and creating custom wood furniture for friends, family and the community. Don was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and lived in the Oneida Long Term Care Home in 2017 and Strathmere Lodge in 2018. His family, friends, and support staff were always greeted with a wide grin whenever they spent time with Don.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the wonderful people from VON, Parkinson Society Southwestern Ontario, Oneida and Strathmere Lodge who supported Don while he was living with Parkinson’s. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Heart & Stroke Foundation and Parkinson Society Southwestern Ontario.

Friends and Family will be Received at Denning’s of Strathroy Saturday, May 25th from 1-4pm for a celebration of Donald’s life and lunch. As per the families wishes colourful attire would be preferred and children are more then welcome to attend. Online condolences can be made at www.strathroyfuneralhome.com.
