Celebration of Life
Obituary of Jacques Chouffot
Jacques Chouffot. November 2, 1950 - November 7, 2019
Jacques’ journey with Lewy-Body dementia ended on November 7 at the Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital with his family by his side. He had just celebrated his 69th birthday. Jacques touched many lives through his love of music, soccer, woodworking and good food and wine. His gentle smile and wry sense of humour will not be forgotten.
Jacques was loved and cherished by his wife, Martha (Strickland), sons Pierre (Sarah) and Jean-Luc (Brianna), his mother Renée Gravel, his sisters Annie Chouffot (René) and Dedée Géhant (Robert) and his brothers Denis (Nelly) and Michel (Corinne). He was predeceased by his father Marcel, his sisters Martine and Jacqueline, his niece Florence, and his step-father Raymond. His family was far away in France but they had him in their hearts as he neared death. Jacques was also loved by his Canadian family, mother-in-law Doris Strickland (Bowman), sister-in-law Carol Hemphill (Ron), brothers-in-law Paul (Janice), Mark (Sascha), David (Ann) and Peter (Cathy). He was a fishing buddy of his late father-in-law Ross and a loving uncle to Jordan. He was also loved by numerous nieces and nephews both here and in France.
Martha, Pierre and Jean-Luc wish to thank family, friends and neighbours who were very supportive over the last two years, and particularly during the last few weeks when suddenly there was a greater need to ask for help. Our hearts were touched. Thanks to Dr. Finger at Parkwood and to Dr. Vanderzwan and his nurse Sandy Wilcox in Strathroy who took good care of him. Thanks to the Strathroy VON office for the community support programs they offered for those with dementia and their caregivers, to Martha’s support group members in Strathroy and at McCormick Home, and to the London and Middlesex Alzheimer’s Society for education courses that provided insight to dementia and strategies for care.
Special thanks to all of the staff at Strathroy-Middlesex General Hospital. They showed tremendous compassion and understanding throughout our time at the hospital. Thank you also to all those who gently supported Jacques at the dentist’s, at the eye doctor’s, at foot care, at the hair salon, or at the bank. And finally, thank you to all those who didn’t know Jacques, but who held doors open for him or gave him warm smiles. Those small acts of kindness warmed our hearts and made the journey easier.
In keeping with Jacques’ wishes, cremation has already taken place. He has donated his brain to the London Brain Biobank to help researchers gain greater understanding about dementia.
Please join Martha, Pierre and Jean-Luc for conversation and light refreshments in a celebration of Jacques’ life at Sunningdale Golf and Country Club in London on Saturday, November 16 from 1 to 4 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Elgin-Middlesex VON (Please specify: Donation to be directed towards Community Supports for Dementia in Strathroy), to the Strathroy-Middlesex General Hospital Foundation, or to the Alzheimer’s Society of London and Middlesex. Online condolences and donations can be made at www.strathroyfuneralhome.com. Arrangements entrusted to DENNING’S OF STRATHROY.
