As a kid growing up at melwood park my mom would take us kids to strathroy every week for our shopping day. Without fail we went to Dicks bakery for fresh baked goods and to the restraunt for treat. Dick was alwsys cheerful and polite To my mom Dorothy and ya kids weather you were wealthy or poor. He was a great man and will be missed dearly by many. Strathroy is at a loss without Dick. RIP my friend. My condolences to his wife and family as well.

I remember going to Nywening's Bakery in the 60's when we lived on a farm in Ilderton. I absolutely loved their chocolate chip cookies ( have yet to find any to compare) and their pale multi- coloured pastel iced birthday cakes!!! May I offer my sincere condolences!!

Dick has been a part of my life since Arden and I met in kindergarten. He was tolerant of us Denning kids when most wouldn’t be. He was a teacher, a leader and a selfless man. A compliment from Dick meant so much as you knew he meant what he said. He loved to laugh at our antics even though he would never condone them. To me, he was the Canadian John Kennedy. Like JFK, if Dick was speaking to you, you were the only person that mattered. You will always be remembered.

When I was in high school in the early 1980s, I often stopped at Nywening's for a snack on my way to my after school job at the A&N. Dick always made me feel welcome, greeting me with a smile and a friendly remark, maybe teasing me about my choice of food (for some reason I liked coffee and egg rolls). It was one of the best parts of my day.

Dick was (still is in my memory) just such a SMILING KIND LISTENING FUN LOVING GENEROUS AND WORLDLY MAN who loved a kindness shown and schtiick in a comment about life.
He so loved his lady and could not say enough about her and that quality I love in a man! a MAN OF QUALITY
He exoooooddddded gentleness and a quick wit ... an admirable man and a very missed humble fun loving GIANT.

Sad news but sweet memories.... and not just the great bakery! I worked with Dick when he managed the produce department for Bill Jarvis' IGA when I was a young teenager without a clue. Dick was a bundle of energy and laughter. He worked so hard and always had a smile and a tease for all the customers....... I guess he influenced my sense of humour but I never really tried to work that hard. He must have only been 19 or so back then but it is a joyous gift to see the life that he created. What a great guy he became. And my father Fred Brown always liked him and respected him. I am sad to hear of his death but so happy that his family, friends and community had decades of that great smile and wit. And poodles! He had poodles..... I miss my old poodle . Obviously great taste in dogs as well. Hugs to all the family and thank you for sharing him with us.
