It was with much sadness that we did receive the news from Mrs Helen Tangelder, of the passing away of Coby. We had her in our prayers, mindful also of the family, during the last few days particularly, as we did hear that life seemed to be ebbing away.
It was sometime in May 1981,that we did meet Coby and her husband Ralph, when we arrived from Grand Rapids to be involved with the pastoral work at Strathroy East, as the late Revd: Johan Tangelder was recovering from heart surgery. Ralph and Coby were the first dear people from Strathroy East, that we did set our eyes on!
That day in May is so vivid in the minds of Maxine and myself. We arrived from Calvin in Grand Rapids on a Greyhound, and alighted at the bus station in Strathroy waiting for an Elder, who was then Vice President of the Consistory, with whom we had some initial telephone conversations. A wait of a few minutes resulted in the arrival of Ralph Bos. We were taken by surprise by both the man and the vehicle ! By that I mean both his “rough” demeanour and a vehicle that had been much in use to put it mildly! Later we did hear that he too was surprised at meeting a Jansz who was coloured !!
The drive with pleasant exchanges took us to his home where we met Coby who welcomed us and treated us to a delicious meal and then got us to do the traditional thing of signing our names on the Table Cloth, which she embroidered later on. That was the beginning of a great friendship through decades, mails, telephone calls and a couple of visits as well. We enjoyed their hospitality always as well as generous provisions from “Ralph Bos Meats” and in the process getting know the rest of the family….some names we still remember, Peter, Dave, Alice, Irving and the younger ones at that time, Renee, Randall and Marvin.
Like so many others – dear people, who befriended us, prayed and gave us unstinted support during our brief ministry at Strathroy East, and who have been called to their eternal rest, Coby has also “fought the good fight, finished the race, kept the faith…and is now enjoying that Crown of righteousness….” We do thank God for her life, her faith, her friendship, and for all the enriching memories and pray God’s peace, comfort and courage upon her dear family. “For all the saints who from their labours rest…Hallelujah!”
