Obituary of Gerrit Jan Weetering
It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gerrit Jan Weetering on Tuesday, February 21st, 2023.
Gerrit was predeceased by his parents Jo and Thyda Weetering, his father in-law and mother in-law Norm Emmons and Marie Emmons. Gerrit leaves behind his loving wife of 36 wonderful years Lynda Weetering [Emmons]. He will be missed by his brother Rienie [Janie] Weetering, his sister Anne [Kelly] Murray and his brother in-law Wayne [Sherry] Emmons. Cherished uncle to Joe, Chris and Jason Weetering and Tyler, Daniel, Curtis and Stuart Murray and all their families. Special uncle to niece Heidi Emmons [Spencer], Gerrit cherished the special bond he had with his only niece. He also leaves behind many, many close friends. In some ways, Gerrit was a very private person, and we will miss him every day.
Gerrit was born in the Netherlands and immigrated to Canada with his family when he was 3 years old. Gerrit started his police career at a young age in Strathroy. He was a proud member of the Strathroy Caradoc Police Service from 1969 until his retirement in 2008. During his career Gerrit worked his way up to the rank of Inspector. He was very proud to wear his uniform and to serve his community for so many years. During his retirement years, he also enjoyed working with the wonderful people at Grace Motors in Delaware for several years.
The family would like to thank Dr. Selay Lam and her professional team at LHSC Cancer Clinic who treated Gerrit for the relatively unknown Cancer “Multiple Myeloma” with care and compassion over the last 9 years.
As per Gerrit’s wishes, the family will be celebrating his life privately at this time. In Gerrit’s memory please consider making a donation to the Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice. Online condolences and donations may be made at www.strathroyfuneralhome.com. Arrangements entrusted to DENNING’S OF STRATHROY.
