I'm so sad that my beloved Oma has passed away. Though technically she was my step-grandmother, she had been part of my family since I was a little baby, and she was the only Oma I ever knew. I have countless memories of Sundays spent with my Oma and Opa at their house in Strathroy, and seeing Oma at every family gathering while I was growing up--she loved parties and always valued spending time with family and friends. She was an incredibly strong woman, and one of the kindest people I have ever known, with an excellent sense of humour as well. I will always remember her playful smile and wink the first time she met [my then-boyfriend] Andrej back in 2019, when she asked me when I was going to marry this handsome young man. She was the first person I called to share the news after I got engaged two years later, and I'm so grateful that she was able to attend my wedding in 2022 despite the health challenges she was experiencing. I'm glad I was able to say goodbye to her in person just a few days ago. Oma was a wonderful grandmother and I will miss her very much.

To my Tante Martha. You were truly one of a kind… extreme kindness and profound strength. In my earliest memories of you, we are visiting the farm in Strathroy. I’m bouncing off the walls of your farmhouse with my cousins, testing the limits of the freedom I felt when there doesn’t seem to be any of the typical rules for an 11 year old. You’re putting supper on the table after just coming in from the barn, and everybody is talking at once. And of course you’re smiling in the midst of it all. You’ve lived and worked and persevered so much, and most importantly, you created a beautiful family that inherited your warmth. I so love that I get to be part of the proud story that you and my dad and my other tante’s and ome’s built after getting off the boat in Canada. Your legacy runs deep and rich and kind, and I will miss you. I’m not able to join everyone tomorrow to say goodbye, but we will be there in spirit. Leon and Bobbi Aarts and family.

Martha was the kindest person I've ever known, she wore her heart on her sleeve, and helped me in so many ways. I'm grateful to have been part of the family and to have had my girls so loved and accepted. Justin will miss coffee Sundays and family coming to her home on Panell Lane. Martha was the first person to hold Justin when he was born, and that's a special memory for me. Love to all the family ❤️ We will miss her but always remember her kindness and good memories.
