Casey, so many fond memories… giving you “horsey” rides, tobogganing at “Dump Hill” (Deep River) – you won the longest run when you made it past the fence, going sailing on Lake Nosbonsing, teaching you some chords on the guitar – a year later you blew us away playing Hendrix, your excitement about going to grad school to study neuroscience… We all have our “special” memories of you Casey, these are some of mine. We will forever miss you little buddy.

Casey, I remember sitting on the couch at the cottage one summer and you were telling us you either wanted an iPod or a guitar for Christmas. I said to you, “Casey, look at your hands, man! You were meant to play the guitar!” I was a bit annoyed when you opted for the iPod that year, but glad when you finally took my advice the following Christmas and even more pleased when you soon proved me right!
Besides a love of music, you and I shared some other common ground – our study of genetics and medical lab technology. You made yourself and your family proud when you excelled in your pursuit of science, just like you did in music and sport.
One of my earliest memories of you was when you were about 2 years old in the backyard in Strathroy. A little baby robin had fallen from the sky while learning to fly and you laid down to have a good look at him. I’m so pleased I was able to capture that moment of such pure joy, curiosity and innocence.
Casey, your kind, gentle and curious soul will be dearly missed by all whose lives you touched. May you find peace now.
And may your parents and family take strength and solace from their cherished memories, and take comfort that you have now found that peace.

Casey,
My first memory of you is on the grass outside of the cottage up at the lake. Kayla, your Mom and Dad, Uncle Eric and Aunty Shirley all nearby. You were so little and had the most kind, gentle presence, and a smile as bright as sunshine. That’s how I always saw you… until you began to play the most badass guitar. Then, I also saw you as my prodigy rockstar cousin.
Lynn was also the one who introduced you to the guitar. But whereas I am still learning my chords…you were rifting like John Mayer. Incredible. And still you remained humble and kind with the most sincere, gentle presence.
And then you began studying some super-smart, important stuff at the Masters level. Now you were my super-smart, prodigy rockstar cousin, who was still kind and humble.
Then I learned that mental illness had gripped you. And I saw you as all of the above, and as someone going through a dark time, but fortunate enough to have such a supportive family that knew the mental healthcare system.
But I’ve come to learn that the system is nowhere near what it needs to be. We’ve made progress in de-stigmatizing mental illness but now we need the resources to handle it properly. For the rest of my life, I will continue to dedicate myself to that cause in any way that I can. I had a thought earlier this week, that with the blessing of your family, all of us who loved you dearly could start and contribute to a bursary or scholarship in your honor.
I know you’re in heaven, and I know Uncle Eric, Aunty Shirley, Gran, Grandpa, Aunty Phil, Uncle Hugh, and all of our loved ones are with you. And I also know that you are at peace, except for your deep sadness for what your family is feeling for you. I know that going forward you would want them to live with love and laughter.
Every time we hear a beautiful melody or see a beautiful site you’ll be with us. And I know we’ll feel your love and your light when we go through dark times.

We did not walk in Casey's shoes. We do not understand the terrible part of his being that captured the goodness in his soul. Maybe he did and he struggled. Greg, Leslie, Kayla, Alex and Syd - words can not convey our sadness. We will remember Casey's love of music - both listening to his favourite rock tunes and playing his guitar in quiet solitude on a rock by the lake. He loved his sports - baseball, volleyball and hockey both as a fan and as a participant.
Casey was a gifted soul who touched so many with his kindness, sense of humour and generosity.
He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
We pray he now finds the peace and solitude that so eluded him in his last few years.

Leslie, Greg, and Kayla and family - We are so sorry for your loss. Casey was a kind and generous person. We will always carry very fond memories of Casey. One particular weekend stay at the Janes’s home comes easily to mind. Casey befriended our son Iain, who is ten years Casey’s junior, to join him in “hanging out” around the house that weekend. We went to see Casey play hockey and that day shaped Iain’s love for the game. Iain closely observed how Casey did things and modelled himself proudly after him. Rest in peace Casey.

Frank and I were extremely saddened to learn about Casey's passing. Although I did not know Casey I do know that he was a wonderful son and brother to Kayla, having been raised by such a great family. Pease know that we are keeping you in caring thoughts. On a visit he surprised us by asking if he could play an old acoustic guitar. Thinking he would just plunk around, we handed him the guitar and were surprised by the fluid and effortless playing.

I am deeply saddened and truly heart broken to hear of the passing of such a wonderful person. Although we were not close as adults I feel as though I watched Casey grow up just as I did my own Brother. My heart aches for Greg, Leslie and Kaylas family. I'm so sorry.
