Hello, was so sad to read on Facebook that Gary had passed away. While we were recently FB friends, in actuality, we are very old friends from Florenceville, New Brunswick and my father Leigh Burnham sold the Thornes their first horses. I have enjoyed re-connecting with Gary through FB of late and through him first learned of Brian's passing. Brian and I went to school together, and Gary was the age of my sisters Barb and Alice. His love of horses was so awesome and he seemed to be so enriched by it and certainly enriched the lives of others through horses. My deepest condolences to his whole family. Gary made a special trip to see my Mom when she was dying and I shall never forget that. Rest in Peace fellow horseman.

Dear Karen & family, Gary literally rode into our life when he brought his mare Penny, a very nice American Saddle Bred, to be bred to our stallion Kithan. He had phoned that he would like to come and Judy and I were surprised when in he rode some 14 miles from Glencoe. I thought to myself "this guy is o.k." and he was and even more. He became a cherished friend for some 40 plus years. We enjoyed his visits and later when he introduced us to Karen we had two good friends that we shared many dinners with and trips to look at horses etc. I had lots of fun going with him to Amish and Mennonite country to harness shops or wagon makers or shoeing his fine Percheron mares, and of course lunch at Anna Mae's Mennonite restaurant at Millbank. Horses were a large part of his life whether they were in front of hay or under a hood. We were shocked and saddened by his untimely death and will miss him terribly but are very thankful for the time we had with him. Ed & Judy

From the stories we have been blessed with hearing I know there were many memorable times spent with Gary which created great memories. The memories don’t stop, they go on for ever and feel free to share more of them with us anytime. Keep the wonderful thoughts in the forefront of your minds as the grieving goes on. Gary has not left you, he has simply left the earth leaving it in your hands to carry on his legacy and to be sure he is not forgotten. To Karen & the entire Thorne family,
We are so sorry for your tremendous loss. What a great neighbour Gary was. We will be forever grateful for his passion for horses as, for over 3 decades, it allowed us to have the most beautiful view of the horses grazing in the rolling pasture in front of our house. We felt like they were our horses too, as indicated by the hundreds of photos we took. Our family appreciated he & Karen allowing us to have toboggan parties on their hill and treasure our memories of the sleigh rides through the bush. Most recently Gary encouraged us to bring our grandson out to the farm to experience the joy of riding, feeding & grooming the horses. He treasures the horseshoe Gary gave him. We enjoyed those visits more than Gary ever knew. He will be missed.

I know the pain of the loss of your Dad, he was so good to come visit my Dad when he was sick at home & terminal. I know my Dad enjoyed the visit reminiscing on the years gone by, their similarities & how they could connect easily inspite of time between visits. Dad appreciated their friendship. I too appreciated that visit & Gary & Chris attending the celebration of life. They were a couple of “the good guys”, both will be greatly missed & i am sure Dad was part of the welcoming committee!
