Obituary of Mary Elizabeth Hammond
HAMMOND: Mary Elizabeth (née Stewart)
Mary loved life. She loved all that life had to offer; her family, her friends, nature, her faith and church, gardening and her home, playing games, watching birds, identifying wildflowers, the colour blue…and the list goes on. Her wonderful spirit was contagious as she modelled a life well lived. Mary Elizabeth Hammond peacefully passed with family by her side on Monday, February 18, 2019 at the age of 90. Beloved wife of the late Reginald John Hammond. Dear mother of Stewart (Penny) Johnston of Victoria BC, Mike (Susan) Johnston of Newmarket, ON and David Hammond of Creston BC. Stepmother to Barbara Cabrera of Stratford ON, and Brian (Faye) Hammond of Bradenton FL. Cherished grandma to Michelle (James), Patrick, Alec, Logan, Corey, Aidan, Michelle, Renée (Shaun), Brad (Krista) and Dan (Leigh). Mary will be greatly missed by her 7 great-grandchildren and her great-great-grandson. Special Aunt to Libby McLachlan and Mary (Ron) Daniel and a large extended family whom Mary held close to her heart.
Born May 31, 1928 in Strathroy ON, Mary was raised on the family farm near Springbank, East Williams Township. She obtained her BA at Western and her teaching degree at OCE. Mary taught History in Kingston, Fergus, and Westminster Secondary School in London, and literacy at Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre. Throughout her career Mary volunteered in the church and led Bible studies. Her faith was always strong and Mary helped many others to build theirs.
Special thanks to Libby and Mary and to the kind and caring staff at Strathmere Lodge
