To Ben and the Smith Family,
You have our deepest sympathy. I worked with Bill for nine years at the carpenter shop. He was not only a great boss but a friend with whom I shared many jokes and the latest hockey scores. He will truly be missed.

I met Bill 17 months ago when I applied to Looby construction for a job. He made me feel valued and welcomed from day one. I had a lot of respect for him. Bill was easy going and we shared a lot of stories over the short time we knew each other. I will truly miss him as my boss and a friend. My sincere sympathy to his family. He was a great guy.

It would be 6.45 am and you get to work and Bill would already be open for business, on the phone talking to someone somewhere in Ontario or reading a blueprint or drawing something that the rest of us would have to make. Always trying to find a better way of doing the job at hand .
Everyone would get a hi, how are you . For sure a joke or a story and then after a little explanation, he would trust you knew how to do the job at hand and then the phone would be ringing, or he would be back at the drawing .
It may have seemed chaotic but man we got a lot of work done and it was fun.
It just won't be the same. I can still hear him say "You are a hell of a man doing a hell of a job!"

Bill will be greatly missed by all of us at Looby. He was a leader and a mentor to me and a friend. He was great at what he did and always had a funny story or joke to tell (and sometimes a couple stories) and was a hard worker and everyone respected him and his knowledge. I will miss his sometimes off-the-wall ideas that actually would work and his general approach to keeping work fun. I know that I will really miss him.

Just wanted to offer my condolences to Bill's entire family, especially Ben. I had the pleasure of interacting with Bill for 30 years at Looby/EllisDon and always looked forward, while at the West Yard, to see what kind of jig or easier way of doing things Bill had come up with since my last visit. I can't imagine 10 experienced bridge builders together knowing what Bill himself knew.
Rest in Peace Bill
